First Look - BOX X6 Carbon Fork

Building off the success of the previous X5 fork, Box unveils the new titanium packed X6 carbon race fork. But is it any good?

The household name in BMX compenetry, Box Components, released the long awaited X6 carbon fork. Prototype models have been spotted on the likes of Niek Kimmann and Cam Wood's race bikes in months leading up to this moment. But finally, we get an inside look at the finished production model.

Setting the Scene

The X6 comes as the latest iteration within Box's line of high-end carbon race forks, and slots in perfectly to Box's seemingly trademarked "oversized" component ecosystem. When Box first disclosed the details to us privately about their on-going project for the X6, we were quite shocked by the sheer ambition of this project. But following the traditional Box methodology of product design, each model get's bolstered and incorporates advancing materials all in the name of increased stiffness and response. The X6 is no different and follows the traditional formula while taking some risk as well.

So let's take a closer look at the X6 and break down its features giving you a deeper understanding of Box's new flagship race fork.

Bigger is Better

Box is infamous for their branded line of 'oversized' componetry. This all started to take off with the advent of the 31.8mm stem & bar combo. Here we saw Box attempt to disrupt the BMX standard of 22.2mm steering components, expanding them to nearly 3x the size. This larger clamping area increased overall front end stiffness, while also providing a strong grip leading to less handlebar slippage under heavy load.

But what does this have to do with the X6?

The X6 doubles down on Box's philosophy that bigger is better, prioritizing strength, durability, and stiffness over minimal weight savings. With the X6 we see larger fork legs, protruding shoulders, and of course a tapered steertube. Each feature serves a purpose in increasing overall stiffness, continuing to contribute to the goal that 'oversized' parts attempt to achieve.

Simply put, the X6 is a beefed up 'oversized' version of the previous X5 fork that's stronger, stiffer, and hopefully as a result, faster!

The Crown Jewel

Arguably the biggest change and what really makes this fork an X6 rather than an X5 2.0, is the addition of a titanium steertube. This material choice produces a steertube that retrains the strength properties of steel while shedding about 45% of the weight. It's the classic BMX Racing formula; retain strength/stiffness while saving weight. The steertube alone is what sets the X6 apart from other forks on the market and will ultimately be the decisive feature upon how people distinguish who this fork is for.

What's in the Box?

The X6 includes:

- X6 Carbon Fork

- Stem lock

- 20mm to 10mm axle adapters

Out the box, the X6 includes everything you'd expect for installation. Using a stem lock design, the X6 offers more adjustment in stack height while also reducing the risk for fork failure. Threaded forks can be extremely convenient, but they aren't devoid of risk. Treads can pull out, strip, or experience some other kind of failure. While it's rare, these issues require a full replacement of the fork. With a stem lock system, the solution is a new $40 stem lock, saving you the potential expense of a new fork.

As for the axle adaptors, they provide more accessibility for the X6. Regardless of your axle size, the X6 will accept a wider range of front wheels. While the X6 works best with a 20mm front hub, it can still accept any 10mm hub in the mean time.

Cool, But Why Do This?

This year we've seen Box lead the charge on titanium infused parts with the release of the 'oversized' titanium bar and now the X6. While titanium has been explored in other regions of the cycling industry, this is the first time (in recent years) we've seen a BMX Race manufacturer invest this much into the material. Traditionally titanium is used for producing lightweight replacement bolts, high-end square taper BBs, and various fixing parts like cogs lock rings. But Box is pushing to expand the material into more BMX components.

At this point, we must address the primary question that looms over the X6 and that's 'why'?

BMX as an industry can be pretty adverse to change, meaning if you're going attempt to change the standard, there better be a damn good reason! The X5 was already successful and loved by many. So what's the point for the lavish upgrades the X6 brings?

Box themselves list 4 key reasons why the X6 is an improved fork over the standard models -

Enhanced Power Delivery

The TITANIUM steerer tube's strength and durability ensure that the front end of the bike can efficiently work as a backstop when the rider pulls up during hard acceleration. This leads to more direct power transferred to the rear and less lost to flex at the bars, especially crucial during intense sprints.

Superior Control

By using a TITANIUM steerer tube, the fork benefits from titanium's natural advantage over carbon to absorb vibrations, providing a smoother, more controlled feel. This enhances the rider's control, especially when navigating rough tracks or performing sharp maneuvers.

Armored Build

The TITANIUM steerer tube is significantly stronger than even the best aluminum alloys, contributing to the fork's overall durability and resistance to fatigue. It’s built to withstand the repetitive stresses of BMX racing, but without having the weight penalty of chromoly steel. This choice reduces the likelihood of material failure and ensuring the bike remains reliable throughout its lifespan.

Advanced Materials

TITANIUM’S toughness and light weight make it an ideal material for the fork's steerer tube. It contributes to a lighter front end without sacrificing strength, and its low-maintenance nature means the steerer tube will remain in top condition even after exposure to harsh racing conditions

The Final Verdict

We view the X6 as a welcome addition to the ever growing landscape of carbon race forks. The X6 stands out as a bold attempt to innovate the modern tapered race fork. Too often we see brands reproducing common trends in racing technology, taking the same copy and paste formula, slapping their brand on it, and sending it to the masses. We really appreciate the ambition of this X6 project. It uses a new material (titanium) and features an extremely unique profile.

But does that mean it's right for you? We can't answer that question, but we can lay out the information to help you make the most informed decision.

With a price point of $599.99 that's going to be a serious pain point for some. But keep in mind that new technology tends to come with an elevated cost. While anyone can ride and enjoy the benefits the X6 brings. We believe the X6 was more specifically designed for riders who continually seek out the cutting edge of BMX components, advancing their build to maximum potential.

It’s an exciting time to be a gear head as BMX technology continues to advance! This is the first of many improvements and while we welcome the addition of the X6, we’re already eager to see what else BOX has in store for the future of racing components.
